Mountain High Games

Arizona Centennial Favorite in Payson, Az

Celebrating the great state of Arizona and its abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, the 3rd Annual Arizona Mountain High Games presented by Rim Country Power Sports and Digitell Verizon Wireless will be held on June 1-3, 2012 at the Payson Event Center. The competition has been designated as an official Arizona Centennial Event.

Professional and amateur athletes from all over the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest will compete for over $10,000 dollars in cash and prizes. Families are also encouraged to enter the Games. You do not have to be a pro to have fun!

Participants in the ATV rides will experience some of Rim Country’s most seldom seen backcountry along with a BBQ dinner, lunch on Saturday, Poker run and trail riding entertainment like singing cowboys … you won’t want to miss it!

The ATV Rodeo sponsored by the Payson Pro Rodeo Committee will start at 7 pm on Friday, June 1. Participants are encouraged to pre-register online. Open to the general public (including kids from age 8), the rodeo offers events like the Cowhide Race, Grocery Race, Barrels and Poles, and Obstacle Course.

The 3D Archery Tournament sponsored by Buds Plumbing and Chasin A Dream Outfitters will start at 11 am on June 2. 4H clubs, amateurs, and professionals are all invited to participate.

Even though we are no longer doing the full Sawdust Festival competition, we are still going to do some of the popular games from that event. Come join in the fun with Homer from The Home Depot on Saturday, June 2 at 3 pm for the Sawdust Pit Grab, Kids Log Stacking Race, Kids Nail Drive, Women’s Rolling Pin Throw and the Cigar Smoking Fire Fighting Competition – the last one with a smokin’ cigar wins! This is a true crowd pleaser!

Don’t forget the 5k trail run, to be held on a newly developed partial primitive trail, an undulating course, all dirt, no asphalt. The race will start at 7 am Saturday, June 2.

Mountain Bike Racers, we have something for you as well. The course will be plus or minus 5k over primitive terrain track. The first race at 9 AM will be the beginners & female division, the 2nd race is for advanced riders, there is also a kids race at 10 AM. Our sponsor Coca Cola will be awarding several fantastic prizes!

If you enjoy eating outdoor food, then we have just what your taste buds are craving. The Dutch Oven Cooking Contest presented by the Rim Country Chamber starts at 1 pm on June 2. Contestants will prepare a main dish, bread and a dessert. Come sample all of these mouth-watering dishes for free. Winner of the 3-Pot Contest will be eligible to enter in The World Championship Cook-Off for 2012 in Utah.

One of the most exciting events of last year was the Blind Draw Horseshoe Tournament, endorsed by the Arizona State Horseshoe Pitchers. This year’s tournament Association presented by the Majestic Rim Retirement Community will take place at Noon on June 2. Contestants are urged to pre-register if possible.

Brand new this year and presented by Anderson Collision Center is a Demolition Trucks Only Derby that will happen on Saturday, June 2 at 7 pm; gates will open at 3 pm. Admission is $10. There will be $2,000 added money in addition to the collective registration fees. Come see’em crash and bash their way to the winner’s circle.

Get registered early and come enjoy a weekend in Arizona’s Cool Mountain Town – close to home and full of adventure in the great outdoors! For more prize money information/registration costs, etc. check out the website or call the Town of Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
