Travelers have long followed the Ancient Way (now known as NM Highway 53) to discover their own TREASURES. Native American long-distance traders transported on their backs valued goods such as turquoise and buffalo hides to exchange for shells, corals, and exotic feathers from the south.
Following these trails and stories of fabled “wealth” came the first Spanish Conquistadors who failed to find gold but encountered the true wealth of these lands of the Southwest – the lands, people, and cultures of this region. Eventually Spanish and later American expeditions traveled this route to learn more about the area. El Morro National Monument about thirty miles east of Zuni features many of the original inscriptions left in the sandstone rock face from these early explorers.
More recently visitors from around the world travel the Ancient Way/Highway 53 to seek what this region has to offer and to discover the arts treasures created by our many thousands of Zuni, Navajo, Hispanic, and Anglo artists. The Zuni Ancient Way Arts Festival is one of the best ways to meet many of these fine artists.
